Moated Settlement

Aim:  To monitor the area and look after the wild plants and wildlife. If appropriate, do more to provide information about the area and encourage its use as a village facility.

Progress as of January 2024:

Rapidly moving ahead. The last few sheep were retrieved by the farmer in November and the fencing taken down in December. Some of the wooden fencing has been kept stacked up for reuse and the rest taken away by local residents for their own use.

On 1st January 6 people took part in a flowering plant survey/hunt of the Site as part of the national study being undertaken by the Botanical Society of England and Ireland. We found 6 plants in flower:

  1. Periwinkle
  2. Dandelion
  3. Daisy
  4. Aconite
  5. Shepherd’s Purse
  6. Petty Spurge (very small)

This sets the baseline for things to come over the next few years. Obviously, plenty of opportunity to improve the biodiversity. The full results can be found on  bsbi.org/new-year-plant-hunt

Plans are now being made to hold volunteer work sessions to clear some of the excessive weed overgrowth and prepare small areas to experiment with different indigenous plants (I’m giving woad a try!). All going well we’ll be doing a bit of tree planting around the edges before March.

Experimental Planting Plots

After quite a few years of not being mown, the grass has become thick and extremely matted. This resulting “sward” now prevents any the growth of other species of plant (except nettles and thistles) from getting a look in and becoming established. To get around this lack of biodiversity a significant effort is required to remove the sward and encourage the growth of new, but indigenous, plants. However, there may still be dormant seed under the sward that goes back some way and we don’t want to destroy anything that is already there. Therefore the plan is to prepare some small “experimental” plots, about 1m in diameter, and see what happens over the next year.

Plot No.1 was started this January. The grass sward has been mostly removed to expose the topsoil but has not been dug over. 20 woad seeds are being germinated in a seed tray and will be planted here when they are big enough.

We would like to have quite a few more of these Plots set up as soon as possible . If anyone reading this would like to “adopt” a Plot (and do all the work of course) please let us know and we’ll get you started.

Tree Plots

No. 1.  First “hands on” work session held on Sunday 28th January 2024. Mostly spend tackling the brambles in the NW corner in preparation for tree planting in this area. 8 volunteers attended:  Dave, Mary, Robert, Jackie, Carol, Steve, Anna and Joy. Very successful and a good time had by all.

February 13th and we are almost ready to start planting a few trees
